Our ED environment is exciting and challenging and we feel rewarding to those
who work here We invite you to come in on the ground floor of our plan to make
our Emergency Department program one of the best in the region while you grow
and thrive with us!
The NUMC Department of Emergency Medicine has already been one of the regions leading Emergency facilities; Adding to this, the hospital is building a 55 million dollar brand new state-of-the-art facility which will be the pride of emergency medicine in the entire region. Moreover, NUMC has recruited a new and energetic leadership and faculty that bring their renowned clinical and academic expertise to patients, students, and residents alike through the recruitment of dynamic Emergency Medicine Attendings, Physician Assistants, and Nurses.
Staff and Affiliations- Our
Emergency Department is led by board certified Emergency Physicians.
Because of our affiliation with the prestigious North Shore / Long Island Jewish
(NSLIJ) Health System, Emergency
Medicine Residents from their Residency program train at our site. Transitional year osteopathic,
internal medicine, and pediatric residents as well as medical students from our
own and various other programs also rotate thru our department. The Emergency Department has all radiologic modalities and consultative services
available.
The Emergency Department faculty has a
reputation for delivering top quality care coupling the latest in medical
knowledge with compassionate and professional bedside manner. Members of our
faculty have received leadership and teaching awards from various groups and
organizations. Many have been published in the medical literature, and have
presented at regional, national, and international symposiums and conferences.
Members of the faculty are invited as lecturing faculty for the Emergency Medicine Residency Programs
at LIJ, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and many other programs in the
metropolitan area. Our
department is an integral part of a hospital administration that truly realizes
that the ED is the true "lobby" of our hospital and we have their full support
in the innovations we are trying to implement
Emergency Medical Services- Our department also provides training to Nassau County EMS and Police. The N.U.M.C. Ambulance Division provides Advanced Life Support transportation services to patients requiring transfer to and from the N.U.M.C Campus and outlying facilities. The Division is comprised of thirty-seven field, and eleven supervisory healthcare professionals with certifications ranging from EMT-Basic through EMT-Paramedic. In addition to the required New York State curriculum for the individual certifications, all members are trained to utilize advanced medical equipment not routinely found on all ambulances. Medication infusion pumps, artificial ventilators, and pulse oximitry are just a few examples.
Trauma-We
offer Long Island’s top Level 1 Trauma Center, which treats more than 50 percent
of all serious trauma in Nassau County. Our current trauma suite is fully
equipped and includes a bedside ultrasound. Our new state-of-the-art burn
center, a 14 bed unit servicing the needs of our area for both adult and
pediatric burn injuries attracts Emergency
Medical Services to our Department by ground and air transport. In fact,
emergency medicine at NUMC has earned the privilege of being the designated
emergency department for the President of the United States if he should ever
require care while in Nassau County.
Pediatrics-
We have a separate Pediatric Emergency Room
that is staffed by physicians boarded in Pediatric Emergency Medicine
and Emergency Medicine. You can feel secure that no matter when it
might happen, your child's emergency can be handled without delay. Nassau University Medical Center also has a
functioning SCAN unit, a model for New York State hospitals in caring for
victims of suspected child abuse and neglect.
Emergency Ambulatory Unit — A Fast-Track Emergency Ambulatory
Unit treats patients with less critical illness.
Psychiatry —
A separately located Psychiatric Emergency
Department is available, staffed around the clock by psychiatrists and specially
trained social workers.
Obstetrics & Gynecology
— We offer a separate
gynecology suite with its own ultrasound. In addition to these acute medical
services, we also offer Family Support Services, and a Sexual Assault / Domestic
Violence Emergency Care Program.
We have recently received the distinction of
being recognized as a Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) Center by the New
York State Department of Health. Ob/Gyn consultation and services are
readily available
Medical Students- We are to be the primary rotating hospital for the new Hofstra University Medical School, scheduled to open in 2011. In addition, we are a clinical campus for medical students from the State University of New York (SUNY) – Stony Brook Medical College, as well as for students attending New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. Several Physician Assistant programs also send their students specifically for the Emergency Medicine clerkship – these include SUNY Stony Brook, Hofstra University, Touro College, and The College of Staten Island. In addition
